Like many of you out there, I love music. It is a very important part of my life and I often listen to several hours of music daily. I envision to combine music with all the other creative endeavors we may choose to explore, especially during retreats.

As with painting and literature, my tastes in music are pretty broad and eclectic. And so is my interest in learning it: I have been wanting to learn how to play piano and drums, as well as sing "properly", that is learn how to "place" and use my voice. But as it is, I am not a musician yet. I have been looking for the "right" teachers with a non-traditional approach to learning music.

Didgeridoo

I had never played any instrument until I picked up Didgeridoo last November 2008. But actually, I didn't pick Didgeridoo, it picked me, unexpectedly but so naturally thanks to Elise Peeples who teaches in Berkeley.

I got the circular breathing down once I really committed to playing at least 45 minutes a day - which took me 2 weeks to realize. So on one hand practice was key, on the other hand, it wasn't about trying too hard. I only needed to blow in the thing and "doodle" mindlessly. In fact, when I tried too hard, I didn't progress one bit. There is one requirement to be able to play didge and that is to relax. I love that! I think that's how all learning should be: fun and effortless!
